The Young Writer’s Guide to Getting Published, Sixth Edition, by Kathy Henderson, Writer’s Digest Books, 2001. Tells you all the magazines and contests that accept writing from young authors, and also gives a lot of practical advice. (Formerly called the Market Guide for Young Writers.)
Children’s Writer’s & Illustrator’s Market, Writer’s Digest, annual. Though mostly for adults, this book also includes a section of publications looking for writing by young authors.
To Be a Writer: A Guide for Young People Who Want to Write and Publish, by Barbara Seuling, Twenty-First Century Books, 1997. An introduction to writing and publishing, by the author of a book on children’s writing that I used myself!
What’s Your Story?: A Young Person’s Guide to Writing Fiction, by Marion Dane Bauer, Clarion, 1992. About all the elements of writing a good story. By a popular children’s author.
The Elements of Style, Third Edition, by William Strunk, Jr., and E. B. White, Allyn & Bacon, 1995. How to write simply and directly. That’s something almost every writer needs to learn, and countless writers have been helped by this book.
The Synonym Finder, by J. I. Rodale, Warner Books, 1991 (revised edition). Every writer needs a thesaurus to help find the very best words. This one is way ahead of the rest!
How to Write, Recite, and Delight in Your Own Poetry, by Joy Hulme and Donna Guthrie, Millbrook, 1996. A good introduction to writing poetry, by two children’s authors.
